Happy Birthday!

Double 1's and spent the day performing at her first band concert (trumpet), enjoying a milkshake for lunch, and watching Rodeo Girl!

A few of my favorites...

We visited Yellowstone for the family vacation this year.  Eleven hours or so in the car plus McDonald's smoothies on the way and we arrived with the family still intact and speaking to each other.  We rented a house in Tom Miner Basin and spent countless hours watching the elk, deer, and grizzly in the river basin below.  For a mere $25 million you can buy the Grizzly Creek Ranch up the road, but luckily VRBO had something more in our price range.

Yellowstone never ceases to amaze and the kids loved the geothermal features, but not the sulfur smell.  And watching Old Faithful erupt at sunset was definitely worth the wait and long drive.  Here are some of my favorite pics from the trip-

 Rafting Yellowstone River
 Tower Falls hike

Spring Break Skiing

Another one for the "odd CO weather" journal - over spring break Breck had great, manageable snow while the Front Range, just 2 hours away, experienced a blizzard.  We had a fun time skiing and then returned home to drifts covering our patio table and a couple hours of snow removal work just to get the vehicle in the garage. We are now placing bets on how long it will take before the snow melts in the backyard with Eli thinking it will be year round this year and Brooke taking June 5.  The rest of us are slightly more optimistic.

The Wizard of Oz!

Eliana as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.  She worked really hard to memorize her lines and she nailed them on the night of the performance!

We had to say goodbye to Dot today, but she left us with a thousand cherished memories.  She helped raise our children - teaching them how to be gentle with her ears and tail and the proper way to throw balls and sticks, not to mention protecting them from countless bunnies and squirrels.  She excelled at pheasant hunting with Shawn and simply hated that she couldn't go with him for deer and elk.  She harvested every single one of our pumpkins just as they reached softball size one year and is the reason we now have a fence around our garden.  She was Michelle's running buddy and made sure we got a number of rest breaks to properly greet everyone on the trail.  And she was the best at clean up - everything from the kitchen floor to the shower floor to jars and jars of maraschino cherries used during a messy party.  She was truly a best friend.  We love and miss you, Dot.

What's In Between

Red and Blue and Grey and Green and
Purple Orange and in between and
Mix them up and tint and shade and
Black is the color that I've made and
Maybe bits of silver there and
Brown for winter branches bare and
Gold is lonely I'll add its light and
Now my cold dark sky is bright and
Shimmers nicely does the sun and
Splashes splatters oh such fun and
This is nice but I'm out of space and
Add some pink for another place and
Probably that will be too plain and
What is with the dancing rain and
Surely colors can fix this scene and
Red and Blue and Grey and Green and
Creative is what's in between.
